people as me this question all the time and i always give the same answer, if they were good then not only would the smoke monster have dragge them all into holes but they wouldnt need to capture good people, they kidnap the childern and other good people so that they can get past the smoke monster or get the good people to do stuff past the smoke monster, its only a theory mind you so its not sertain but its the best reason i've got.
