Before the Crash
Libby's early life remains quite a mystery, as no flashback has been given of her life. However, from some information she has given, and from her appearances in other characters' flashbacks, we can gather some facts.
Libby trained as a young medical student, before dropping out in her first year, undertaking practice to become a Clinical Psychologist instead. She may also have had three different husbands (though this information comes from a deleted scene, and so may not be accurate). Libby did, however, have at least one husband named David. However, David tragically died, leaving Libby a widow at such a young age.
In 2001 (approximately), Libby met with Desmond in a coffee shop. She offerred to pay for his cup of coffee, and the two sat down together. Desmond told Libby about his plans to sail around the world, only to be informed that she had been left David's sailboat after his death (which was supposedly only a month ago). The boat was named "Elizabeth", and Libby told Desmond him taking it was what David would have wanted.
Libby was later also a patient at Santa Rosa Mental Institute around the same time as Hurley. It is unknown why she had been admitted, though it may possibly relate to David's death. After this, the only information we know about Libby's past is that she intervened during a heated conversation between Eko and Charlotte Malkin in Sydney Airport before boarding, asking if everything was alright. With the reassurance that everything was fine, Libby moved on and boarded Oceanic Flight 815.
On the Island
After crashing on the island, Libby was one of the first survivors to help treat the injured. This was not to go unnoticed by Ana-Lucia,and when she became self-elected leader of the Tailies, Libby was one person she acknowledged when it came to advice and reason. She claimed to be a clinical psychologist after dropping out of medical school, and in a deleted scenes tells Hurley that she specialised in marital and domestic problems. Along with the rest of the group, Libby occupied the Arrow station, and was one of the first of her group to meet the middle-section passengers, finding Jin unconscious by the water. Her caring medical nature seemed to continue, with her lying to Sawyer about how bad his wound was in order to motivate him to keep going.
When she first arrived at the main Losties' camp, she soon took a shining to Hurley. Indeed, she flirted with him in The Swan bunker's laundry room (though seemed to become quite evasive when Hurley mentioned that he recognised her from somewhere before the crash).
Libby was to also play a key role in helping survivors come to terms with demons in their past. For instance, she helped Claire regain her memories of the Medical Station through what looked like hypnotic regression. She also helped Hurley try to rid himself of his eating habit, and stopped him from jumping off a cliff, right before she kissed him.
Her relationship with Hurley after this moment developed, and Hurley invited her for a picnic, but end up going in circles. When Libby decided to go and get some blankets for their date, she accidentally walked in on Michael killing Ana-Lucia. Surprising Michael, he shot her twice in the stomach. Michael would later call this a mistake, but seemed to agree when Hurley asked if he would have killed her anyway (since she had witnessed Michael kill Ana-Lucia).
After being shot, Libby fell into shock and suffered massive bleeding. Jack injects heroin into her from Sawyer's stash as a pain relief after it became clear she would not survive. With her last dying words, she muttered "Michael", but this was misconstrued by Jack to mean "is Michael ok?". His response that he was fine and well seemed to cause Libby's eyes to widen with recognition that they had been fooled, and she tragically died with a look of terror on her face. Her funeral was held along with Ana-Lucia's, but was interrupted by the appearance of the boat that she had years earlier given to Desmond, the "Elizabeth".
